Empecé en el agua
a los seis años.
Todavía no me bajo.
I started in the water
at six years old.
I still haven't come down.

Seven things that happened to me, and why I know how to put someone in front of a camera.

01

El salto que me bajó de nivelThe dive that took me down a level

As a kid I was doing dives well beyond my age, until one of them injured me badly. After that dive I lost my orientation in the air. I'd hit the water wrong, hurt myself, and each attempt left me worse than the last.

My coach at the time didn't know what to do with me. He wasn't a bad man — he just didn't have a method. And without a method, fear doesn't get fixed by trying more. It gets bigger. My level started dropping and nobody understood why.

Veinte años después entendí que ahí
no me faltaba valor. Me faltaba
alguien que supiera acompañarme.
Twenty years later I understood: what
I lacked wasn't courage. It was
someone who knew how to walk me through it.

A los trece empecé a entrenar a otrosAt thirteen I started coaching

I ended up coaching the same people I'd grown up competing against. My own coach said the line that broke something in my head: they're not your friends any more, they're your students. Nobody prepares you for that change of category.

One day they handed me a group of six kids already too old for their category. Nobody believed in them — that's why I got them. Of those six, four went on to compete and two made the Colombian national team.

And I coached a student with a real phobia of heights. We didn't work on the dive — we worked on what sat behind the fear, step by step, without rushing her. At the end of it she jumped from seven metres.

At a show in Belgium I landed flat on my back from height, in front of the whole audience. I recovered, finished the performance — and that same night I did the same dive again.

Lo difícil no fue caerme.
Fue volver a subir con la misma
gente mirando.
The hard part wasn't falling.
It was climbing back up with the same
people watching.

I used to repeat one line to myself before a new dive: you're going to die anyway. It sounded dark and did the opposite — it took the fear down to its root, and every fear in between lost its grip.

Dejé de competir para volver a jugarI quit competing to go back to playing

Yo jugaba. I left competition at a good point in my career. It wasn't fear of losing — it was that constant comparison took away the one thing that brought me to the sport. As a kid, in the club shows, I wasn't competing. I was playing.

Walking away from something you're good at isn't always failure. Sometimes it's deciding where you actually want to go.

El contrato llegó un lunesThe contract came on a Monday

By Wednesday I was already filing the visa for China. I didn't go looking for it: it came because I'd spent years preparing and meeting people. Luck finds you ready, or it finds you with nothing to offer.

For the first months I barely spoke Chinese or English. I'd get on a random bus, get off somewhere I didn't know, and walk with no direction — forced to work out how to eat and how to get home without being able to speak. I didn't learn in a classroom. I learned lost.

Today I live in Panyu with my wife and our two children. She's Russian, I'm Colombian, the kids are growing up in China. Three languages at one table — and arguments in all three. I didn't learn to work across cultures on a course: I practise it at home every day.

Dos vidas el mismo díaTwo lives in the same day同一天里的两种人生

At six in the evening I close my laptop. At eight I climb a twenty-five metre tower in front of thousands of people. People assume one of the two is the hobby. Both are real, and both cost the same to hold up.

Yo me quedé. I joined an experimental technology team of three or four people coming from a one hundred percent athletic background, with no prior experience in the sector. The others were let go one by one. I stayed. Not because I knew more, but because of a technique I brought from sport: find someone who already does it, study them every day, until your body adopts it as its own.

Por qué graboWhy I film

It took me years to put a camera in front of myself, with twenty-five years of experience jumping into open air in front of thousands of people. It turns out it's the same muscle. And like any muscle, it's trained.

I spend my whole day translating: between languages, between cultures, between a client in China and a market on the other side of the world. Filming a product is the same job, with a camera in between.

And there's a deeper reason. Live entertainment is full of Latin American talent that never finds the door. I found mine by chance, on a Monday. I want to leave that door open for the ones coming behind me.

If you got this far, you're probably weighing up working with me. What I do for brands is on the other page.
